Article Title: Seeing Beneath the Surface: Dr. Chau Yee Ng Presents Advanced Melasma & Leukoderma Research at Korea Derma 2025

At the prestigious Korea Derma 2025 held in Seoul, Dr. Chau Yee Ng (MD, PhD), Director of our center, was invited to share her team's latest insights on one of the most challenging dermatological conditions: Melasma and Laser-induced Leukoderma (Hypopigmentation).

Unveiling the Skin’s Secrets with OCT Technology

During her presentation, Dr. Ng showcased groundbreaking research utilizing Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). This non-invasive imaging technology allows clinicians to literally "see beneath the surface," providing critical data on what happens under the skin after laser treatments.

"Melasma is one of the toughest adversaries in pigmentary disorders," Dr. Ng noted. It is prone to recurrence and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Furthermore, overly aggressive laser treatments can sometimes lead to "laser-induced leukoderma"—white spots that are difficult to reverse.

Melasma as a Sign of "Skin Aging"

By analyzing clinical and imaging data from nearly 70 patients, Dr. Ng’s team highlighted a crucial finding: Dermal aging plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of melasma.

Dr. Ng emphasized that laser therapy should be viewed as an adjunctive tool rather than a cure-all. "The goal isn't just to target melanin," she explained, "but to improve the health of the underlying fibroblasts." A holistic approach combining topical agents, oral medications, and skin barrier repair is essential to restore skin balance and achieve long-lasting results.

The session also covered the safety of laser treatments for vitiligo patients, where Dr. Ng shared diagnostic criteria for distinguishing different types of post-laser leukoderma, helping clinicians make more accurate decisions before proceeding with treatment.

A Reflection on Stability: In Skin and In Life

Following the intense academic sessions, Dr. Ng took a moment to enjoy Seoul’s vibrant autumn scenery. Amidst the healing maple leaves and a relaxing visit to a traditional jjimjilbang (Korean sauna), she found a brief respite from the fast-paced world of medical research.

Dr. Ng concluded her presentation with a thought-provoking message that resonates with both dermatology and life:

“In life, just like in skin — what truly matters often lies beneath the surface.”

Stable skin, much like a stable mind, requires time, patience, and dedicated care. This philosophy remains at the core of Dr. Ng’s practice and our center’s commitment to patient care.
